There is not a genuine immediacy

There was an entire shit storm

surrounding the self policing that

you may have missed. The current

admin team are what’s left. We,

who were against self policing and

fought for the principles you

suggest, are the ones currently

holding this together with reduced

staffing levels and the same ones

you are currently making demands

of after an already demanding 24

hours. We had BIPOC admin –

bloody good ones – and they were

lost in the same shit storm. They

are good friends and I remain ever

pissed about that. Turning off

comments was the only option

available to us and comments

have been returned to one post

only so we can coordinate

responses. Give us a break while

we recruit more admin or rejoin us

when we have achieved it. Sorry if

I’m a little short. I’m tired and fed

up of being treated like we work

for people here or that we owe

We tend not to discuss other

members as it isn’t fair, especially

when they have chosen to leave the

group.

Yesterday a member repeatedly

name called another member. That

person was muted.

In PMs they then highlighted that

there was an issue with the member

they had name called: that the person

was anti-Semitic. We requested they

show us where this occurred so we

could act upon it. They did not

provide this evidence and got hostile

towards admin. The member

accused of anti-semitism had

already left our group so we could

not act upon this further anyways.

Subsequently the other member

chose to leave the group as well.

Name calling is not acceptable. If

someone has said anything

problematic or bigoted please tag

admin.

As both members have chosen to

leave the group this situation is over.

Subsequent posts on the topic were

closed or deleted not out of an effort

to silence vulnerable people, but to

keep the discussion in one place so

we could manage it. Our job is to

make sure every member follows the

code of conduct, no matter what is

their racial identity, cultural identity,

gender identity, etc. As admin,

holding members to this code is

different from tone policing.

recently shrunk considerably is a

tall order. Modmins did not ignore

the issue, they commented

repeatedly to say the issue will be

dealt with when the modmins have

the time to give the issue and the

members involved the time and

focus they deserve. In the mean

time comments were turned off

on some posts, I imagine to

prevent things spiralling further. I

can’t see the issue there – if no

explanation had been given that

would be different, but it was. If

comments hadn’t been turned off

what you get is members

descending into arguments fuelled

by inadequate or inaccurate

information and it escalates

quickly causing a lot of what often

ends up being unnecessary drama

which affects all of us.

point. I didn’t see it either when

she first pointed it out. But this is

why we listen to marginalized

groups. There was a call to action

among white supremacists

yesterday (it’s a “trending topic”

today). Instead of listening when

she called it out, she was silenced.

*Then* when another POC posted

asking about it, she was also

silenced (deleted). That’s

problematic.

the admins asked for time to

deal with the problem while they

looked for the anti Semitism and

would have muted or booted the

person who had been anti

Semitic once they looked into it

but the person left before that

could happen.

This all happened very late here,

the group is majority British

membership, and the admins

asked for time to look into it and

respond because it was nearly

midnight

I can see that the term ‘puppet’

was used and I understand that

isn’t appropriate. But many

people in my country aren’t

aware of the harmful rhetoric
