Our Holmlife: Ava’s Autism Journey

30 May.

I’m sorry for the TMI, but we have been trying this for

at least 6 years and progress is like gold. Ava pooped

in the toilet for the first time yesterday!!! We were

thrilled. Nothing happened today, so we will see if we

can go for a repeat tomorrow. Excited doesn’t even

cover it.

Just to add on here, I immediately

recognised the blog, the op also

looks for funding for ABA for Ava.

They’ve been in autistic groups

and deliberately cause trouble and

triggering.

Her

classmates already know. She

wore pullups to school. There are

two sides of the coin. She can also

read how incredibly hard she

worked to accomplish something

and how proud I have always been

of her.

The sad truth is, there probably

won’t be colleagues in her future

and her friends will be caregivers.

I do not give up hope for so much

more, but I am also a realist.

You can act shocked and mad, but

the fact is, not every autistic child

will grow up being able to

accomplish many things. I will

never stop reaching for the stars

for her. If they day comes where

Nothing

happened with that by the way

You also defend it on your blog,

citing negatively the anger of

autistic groups.

Yes it

started as that. But we are trying

to fund SLP, OT, swimming

lessons, violin lessons, etc.

Although that was pre covid.

This is exactly how I feel, and the actually autistic

group think she’s a monster for this. I do not

understand their group. What I understand less, is this

mom is autistic and calls herself high functioning.

Which that group pounced on. There is no agreement

in their community. If someone doesn’t mind being

calling themselves something that angers another,

they keep calling themselves that.

ABA therapy is not abusive. It’s not ableist, nor is it

conversion therapy, either.

Our autistic children don’t do ABA therapy from

some misplaced parental desire to make them

“normal”, and nor is it to eliminate their autism.

They’re in therapy because they need to learn the

essential skills to keep them safe, happy, and

independent, and to not make an earnest attempt

at this would be wrong.

I’m sorry I haven’t been posting. I’m going through a

bit of a conflicting time. I want to vent about the

haters. What purpose would that serve though. I don’t

want to post and get vitriol spewed at me, but then

they win. I want to speak my truth, but what is my

truth right now. I feel a great sadness for the fracture

within our autism communities. I want to speak about

the hard, but also want to give hope. Thank you

everyone for supporting our page. I definitely want it

to grow, so please share it if you would like too. I do

love hearing your stories, or seeing your kids. I do love

teaching people about autism to build awareness, that

will hopefully lead to acceptance

In March, April and May you

posted in favour of ABA. Now you

say you have “gotten away from

ABA” which is great news.

But where does it say that?

Surely that is an incredibly strong

message to send out to your

followers?

You say the blog is to educate – so

please educate them about the

harm of ABA. Do a post explaining

why you have moved away and

who helped you see the harm in it.

That would be a great thing to

see.

Vikki Holmberg will you consider

doing a post like this?

Just because ABA “worked” to make

your child more normal doesn’t mean

that it’s not ABUSE. #ABAisAbuse

ABA is conversion therapy for autistic

Local mom reaches out to

community for donations to

autistic daughter’s therapy

Brooke Hovey | July 21, 2018 in Penticton

“Imagine your daughter never getting invited to

birthday parties, never driving, never graduating,

never getting married, never living on her own, or

pursuing her dreams. Well, that’s profound

autism,” Vikki Holmberg writes on her the

GoFundMe page titled ABA for Ava.

Here’s an example of our play based therapy. I made mistakes but I’m learning. Ava as always is a

rockstar. Do you see the abuse? Do you see me forcing her to do things? Do you see how unhappy…
